A pretty Cotswolds town, Cirencester was once famed for its wool trade and still boasts an impressive market square. Brimming with beautiful buildings dating back to Roman times and an imposing cathedral-like church, it’s the perfect location for a relaxing break.
The town has an intriguing past, as it was once the second-largest town to London. It still hosts a fantastic farmers’ market every second and forth Saturday of the month and a programme of markets within the Corn Hall. When you’re not perusing the markets, there are a plethora of independent shops to explore, pretty courtyards to admire and historic streets to stroll. Head away from the main streets and discover a treasure trove of unique shops and cafes at Swan Yard, The Woolmarket and Stable Yard.
If wandering the streets has piqued your interest in Cotswolds history, head for the Corinium Museum to travel back to Roman times and admire the artefacts and beautiful mosaics. Take time to stroll to the Roman amphitheatre, where you can almost hear the echoes of our ancestors.
When you’re tired from exploring, enjoy a relaxing picnic in one of Cirencester’s peaceful green spaces, from the parkland in Earl Bathurst’s estate (Cirencester Park) to Abbey Grounds where the lake provides a scenic backdrop for a waterside snack.
There’s so much to do and see that you’ll need a lovely comfortable base to relax in, and our holiday cottages in Cirencester offer just that.
