Sitting by a loop in the River Tweed, Coldstream is a small town in the Scottish Borders. It is famous as the site of the 1316 Battle of Skaithmuir between the Scottish captain Sir James Douglas, and an English raiding party from Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The Coldstream Museum is the town’s top attraction, detailing the history of the area and the regiment which bear the same name. The Coldstream Guards are the oldest continuously serving regiment in the British Army, having been active since 1650.
On Coldstream's well-equipped High Street, you'll find plenty of local shops in addition to the Besom Inn, a welcoming pub and restaurant serving fine ales and hearty meals. There are grocery shops, cafes and takeaways, as well as some pleasant green spaces. For some fresh air and glorious scenery, take a walk along the banks of the River Tweed and keep your eyes peeled for salmon which can be seen leaping in season, and a variety of birds such as herons, oystercatchers and cormorants.
The woodlands, parkland and lake of Hirsel Country Park (1.5 miles) provide a scenic location for a walk and wildlife watch. While the house isn’t open to the public, it’s a lovely setting and there is a tearoom and arts and crafts centre to enjoy too.
Hop in the car for a day trip to the coast at Berwick-upon-Tweed (23.5 miles). The seaside town offers sandy beaches and plenty of attractions to fill a whole day or more.
