Cornhill-on-Tweed lies on the eastern banks of the famous river, in the English county of Northumberland, just a short walk from the border with Scotland. Its strategic importance has provided Cornhill with a turbulent past and it has changed hands between the two countries at various points over the last thousand years or more.
Though the village is small, it has its own pub, the Collingwood Arms, where you can be sure of a hearty meal in a welcoming atmosphere. There’s also a village shop and Post Office where you can pick up necessities, and the closest town, Coldstream, lies just across the river. Here you’ll find a few shops and eateries, the Hirsel Golf Club and the Coldstream Museum where you can learn the history of the famous regiment who marched to London in 1660.
You needn’t venture far to find scenic walks – the River Tweed itself makes a beautiful backdrop for a stroll, with the chance to see salmon, herons and other wildlife if you keep your eyes peeled. The coast is within easy reach for days out and coastal walks. Berwick-upon-Tweed (13 miles) offers beautiful sandy beaches, an interesting town and riverside walks to admire the three bridges. There’s also a splash park – perfect for families to cool off in the summer – and a whole host of art galleries and museums to while away a day.
There are coastal walks aplenty, taking in sights such as Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle. If countryside walking is more your preference, Cornhill is a perfect spot from which to explore the beautiful Northumberland landscape, with rolling fields and the Cheviot Hills to the south.
