Situated on the River Nith, the town makes the perfect base for those looking to explore the wider South Scotland area. Previously the home of the writer Robert Burns who lived in Dumfriesshire and the town between 1788 and 1796, there is a statue commemorating the man’s life and works close to Greyfriars Church. Also, the steam engine was invented in Dumfries by inventor William Symington in 1788. Trials took place on the nearby Dalswinston Loch. The history in the town is widespread and has many notable characters in its historical records. The town is affectionately known as the Queen of the South, which is also the name adopted by Dumfries’ Football Club based at Palmerston Park. People from the town are known (colloquially) as Doomhamers. Unusually, Dumfries has been the sight of four earthquakes, two occurring on Boxing Day (1979 and 2006).
A town of bridges, Dumfries has several that span the River Nith (Scotland’s seventh longest river) – the Devorgilla is the old bridge and there is an eye-catching suspension bridge close to the town weir known as The Caul.
