Nestled at the southern edge of Ullswater, the second biggest lake in the Lake District National Park , Glenridding is a pretty village that’s surrounded by stunning mountain scenery at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass. It was once described by Wordsworth as ‘The loveliest square mile in all of Lakeland’ so it’s well worth staying a while in a Glenridding cottage and exploring the area. We recommend bringing along your hiking boots as there are plenty of scenic trails to follow from your holiday home in Glenridding including a waterfall walk to Aira Force and a challenging climb up Helvellyn, which is the third-highest mountain in England.
Taking to the beautiful waters of Lake Ullswater is easily done from a Glenridding holiday cottage with sightseeing steam boat trips regularly setting off from the pier house and calling at Pooley Bridge and Howtown. The Glenridding Sailing Centre offers boat hire and sailing tuition if you fancy trying kayaking or canoeing on Ullswater and paddleboarding is also a popular activity to try on the lake during a Glenridding getaway. Nearby places to visit include Patterdale and the unspoilt Martindale Valley which is a haven for red squirrels.
