Set beside the River Don in the heart of Aberdeenshire, Inverurie is surrounded by countryside which is dotted with castles aplenty. Known as the Capital of the Garioch, having been founded by the Earl of Garioch, Inverurie is steeped in history and offers numerous interesting sites in the close vicinity.
The ruins of Kinkell church will be top of any history lovers list, an abandoned place of worship which was built in 1538 and lies to the south of the town. Mons Grampius (5 miles) is also a noteworthy site, thought to have been where the Picts were defeated by the Romans in 84 AD which is important as it was the first ever battle on Scottish soil. You can also visit the Pictish symbol stone, the Brandesbutt Stone, and stone circle at nearby Easter Aquhorthies (2 miles). A free visit to the Garioch Heritage Centre will help you better understand the history of the area with an interesting display of artefacts and information housed in the renovated Inverurie Loco Works.
When it comes to outdoor adventure, Inverurie offers walking opportunities in spades, with a favourite destination being the Bennachie hill range. Pick a route and prepare yourself for astounding views of the attractive Aberdeenshire countryside. For a day out with a difference, Thainstone Mart livestock auction is a sight to behold.
If you’re looking to tick off some castles and stately homes during your visit, Castle Fraser (8.5 miles), Haddo House (13 miles) and Balquhain Castle of Duguid (3.5 miles) are just a few of the options within easy driving distance.
