Remote, rugged and with landscapes that will truly take your breath away, it’s no wonder that the Isle of Skye is one of Scotland’s most well-loved destinations. At 50 miles long, there’s plenty to explore, from climbing in The Cuillin Range and the Trotternish Ridge, to coastal walks and wildlife watching. The capital of the Isle of Skye is Portree, a colourful, bustling town which has everything you could need during your stay on Skye: eateries, leisure centre, cinema, shops, supermarkets, banks and petrol stations, as well as daily buses to Inverness in mainland Scotland.
There are walking opportunities aplenty all across Skye. Iconic sites such as The Old Man of Storr, The Quiraing, Fairy Pools, Neist Point, Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls can all be reached by walking through the epic landscapes. As for history and heritage, the island’s castles certainly deserve being factored into your itinerary. Spectacular Dunvegan Castle is set in a beautiful coastal location within the 42,000-acre MacLeod Estate in the north of the island, while Armadale Castle, Gardens and Museum in the south provides a lovely day out. While you’re out and about, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as red deer, eagles, otters, seals, whales and dolphins.
When it comes to eating and drinking on Skye, you’ll be spoilt for choice with everything from cosy pubs to fine-dining restaurants. Pay a visit to Talisker Distillery on the shores of Loch Harport for a tour and to sample the fine single malts against the beautiful backdrop of the Cuillin Mountains.
