On the north-east edge of the Lake District National Park lies the village of Lowther. Just 7 miles away from the eastern shores of Ullswater, you are only 20 minutes or so away from some wonderful lakeside walks and forest trails. If you prefer to be on the water, rather than walk around, you can hop aboard the Ullswater Steamer which glides lazily around the lake, allowing you to see the sights without moving a muscle. On the way, pop into Lowther Castle and Gardens where you can walk around the ruins and settle down for an afternoon tea and a bit of retail therapy in the café and tearoom.
