Exploring Lyme Regis
Lyme Regis is a popular destination for holidaymakers and for good reason too. With a wealth of things to do, from fantastic attractions to natural history, you’ll certainly never be bored.
For many, the beautiful coastline around Lyme Regis is the major draw. Steeped in history, it’s a playground for people who love nature and discovering more about the world around them. One of the key events in the Lyme Regis calendar is the Fossil Festival during which visitors can learn about the history revealed in the local cliffs and beaches.
The 95 mile stretch of the Jurassic Coast covers an unbelievable 185 million years of the Earth’s history and you can find your very own historical treasure by taking a guided fossil walk with the Lyme Regis Musuem.
Of course, there are other ways to enjoy the coast. Take to the water on a mackerel or deep sea fishing trip and return home with your dinner or try your hand at one of the many water sports on offer, including windsurfing and kite surfing.
If you prefer not to get your feet wet, there are several beaches in Lyme Regis where you can simply relax with a good book in the sunshine, or in the winter enjoy a bracing walk to watch the crashing waves. Admire the cliffs from a distance as they can be unstable. If you’ve brought your four-legged friend along too, Back Beach, Church Beach and Monmouth Beach are dog-friendly all year round, while on Town Beach dogs are only permitted from March to November.
On a fine day, it’s nice to simply sit and enjoy the views from Marine Parade on the seafront with an ice cream or portion of fish and chips.
The town itself is a great place for a stroll, with local shops, art galleries, gardens and cafés you could while away a pleasant few hours wandering from one to the next. Lyme Regis even has its very own functioning water mill which was recently updated to include an electricity generator. You can watch as the giant waterwheel turns, powering the heavy grindstone which converts corn into fine wholemeal flour.
Take a walk to the end of the historic Cobb and you’ll find the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium. Popular with adults and children alike, the aquarium houses marine life local to the area and is a great place to discover what inhabits the water just off the coast.
If you’re a Jane Austen fan you may be interested to visit the steps where Jane Musgrove fell in Persuasion. You can also step into the footsteps of actress Meryl Streep in the location where she looked out to sea in the film adaptation of The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
Find out what’s further afield
Although there’s plenty to do in Lyme Regis itself, if you’d like to get out and about there’s much more sightseeing to be done in the local area.
Approximately 6 miles from Lyme Regis are the small seaside towns of Seaton and Beer. You can spend a relaxing day enjoying the beautiful scenery and picturesque cottages or step back in time at on the Seaton Tramway or the Beer Heights Light Railway.
Dotted all along the Jurassic Coast are seaside towns where fossil hunting and fun times await. Nearby Charmouth is a particular favourite among fossil collectors, where ammonites can be picked up along the shore. Further along, West Bay basks in the golden glow of its glorious sandstone cliffs and is a wonderful location for those who love walking, scuba diving, nature and more. Further along still, Abbotsbury is home to the unique Abbotsbury Swannery with its colony of resident nesting mute swans.
