Malham Tarn is England’s highest freshwater lake, a glacial lake which sits 3 miles north of the village of Malham. The limestone landscape and geological features make it a picturesque location to explore, with numerous different walking routes which take in sights such as the waterfall of Janet’s Foss and the Tarn Nature Reserve which harbours a wealth of wildlife.
Malham Tarn is known for its fishing which has been popular throughout the ages. Wild brown trout and pike are among the species you can hope to catch here. The village of Malham itself is very pretty, characterised by its limestone buildings and babbling stream which divides it in two. Malham Cove is a much-photographed natural attraction; a vertical cliff face which towers 260 feet high, curving around to form a natural amphitheatre overlooking the village. Its striking appearance made it the perfect choice for the location in which Harry Potter camps in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Another must-visit site in the local vicinity is Gordale Scar, which is a dramatic gorge with tumbling waterfalls rushing down through the limestone hillside.
