Self-catering holiday cottages in Norham
Norham is a small village found beside the River Tweed on the English side of the river. Just 7 miles from the popular town of Berwick-upon-Tweed on the coast in northern Northumberland, you are well-placed for exploring both Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Although small, the village is home to two pubs, several shops and a range of local businesses so you won't be left wanting for things to do. The little village boasts the impressive ruins of Norham Castle which sits high up on a grassy mound overlooking the River Tweed. It’s not hard to see how foreboding it would have been to the soldiers involved in at least 13 besieges it experienced during its time. It is a top spot to include on a riverside walk, taking in the local historic woodland and ending with an obligatory pub lunch. The River Tweed is well known for its seasonal salmon fishing, and Norham makes a good base if you’re looking to try your luck.
A day out to Berwick-upon-Tweed is a must. With beaches, riverside walks, a golf club, boat trips, a castle and plenty of shops and eateries to while away a few hours, it makes a lovely addition to your holiday itinerary. Head further north and you’ll get to the Scottish town of Eyemouth on the coast. Steeped in history, its colourful stories of smuggling are to be discovered at the mansion of Gunsgreen House.
