North Petherton is a small town just 3 miles from Bridgwater. Formerly England’s largest village, it became a town in the late 20th century. Although a town in its own right, many wrongly think that the town is merely a suburb of its larger neighbour, Bridgewater. North Petherton does, however, have its own amenities including shops, banks, petrol stations and supermarkets. Situated at the edge of the Quantock Hills and within a few miles of the coast at Kilve, Watchet or Burnham-on-Sea, there are plenty of places to visit in the area. Bridgewater is a very pleasant Somerset town, home to a town museum, riverbank walks, the UK’s first concrete house, a cinema and lots of shops and places to eat. North Petherton has a number of claims to fame including the fact that the poet and civil servant Geoffrey Chaucer was a ranger at the royal estate of Petherton Park, where you can visit for days out. The famous Alfred Jewel – on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford was found there too and is one of the UK’s most important archaeological finds. Walkers will love the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal that runs by the town and offers peaceful outings along the tow paths where you can encounter all kinds of wildlife. Stop in at the Maunsel Lock Canal Centre and Tea Shop offers local food and boat trips.
