Located at the northern end of Lake Ullswater, Pooley Bridge is one of the most beautiful villages in the Lake District. Its namesake bridge, which dates back to the 16th century, can be found in the heart of the village, crossing the River Eamont. Also found in the village centre are the Victorian St Paul's Church, complemented by the old blacksmith's houses as well as a small group of period houses.
Pooley Bridge's main attraction is being situated at the cusp of Lake Ullswater, and from here many people enjoy exploring the lake on the Ullswater Steamers. Also travelling to Glenridding and Howtown at the southern end of the lake, the boat rides take in stunning views of the lake as well as Helvellyn, the National Park's highest peak, in the distance.
There's many excellent walks to be had from Pooley Bridge, including Shepherds Walk 57, which climbs Dunmallard Hill. On this walk you will discover Maiden Castle, a circular Iron Age fort.
