Southwold is a small town on the coast of Suffolk, around 10 miles south of the larger coastal town of Lowestoft and just to the north of the River Blythe. Southwold sits within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and provides the perfect mixture of wonderful countryside and local amenities for a splendid break in one of our fine holiday cottages. The town’s principal landmark is its lighthouse. Commissioned in 1890, it stands as a prominent landmark in the centre of the town and is a Grade II-listed building, though it almost burnt down just six days after its six-wick Argand oil burner was switched on. Another point of interest is Gun Hill - not strictly speaking a hill, rather a green overlooking the beach – which contains six 18-pounder-cannon facing out to sea; these are to commemorate the Battle of Sole Bay. If relaxation is more the aim for your trip to Southwold, the beach will be your most likely destination. Southwold Beach is a regular winner of the well-respected Blue Flag award for high-quality beaches, and its pier is one of the most famous in the country, with a classic English pavilion and ice cream, entertainment, and everything you’d need for a fun day out for the whole family.
