Perched upon steep limestone cliffs with idyllic lanes branching off from the main street, Stoney Middleton is a picturesque village with a lot of character. The community spirit resonates in every little nook, with flags and banners hung out every year to celebrate carnival week and the traditional well dressing ceremony, all creating quite the spectacle for visitors who have never witnessed it before.
Its history of limestone quarrying makes for an intriguing visit, with heritage trails, listed buildings and limestone formations adding to the interest. Activities for the outdoor-minded are plentiful, with climbing, caving, walking and cycling on the menu of adventures on offer. It’s a fantastic jumping-off point for exploring the breathtaking scenery of the Peak District National Park. The valley of Coombs Dale is one local area worth exploring – a tranquil dale, rich in wildlife and showcasing a landscape of woodland, stony terraces and grassland. Close to Sallet Hole Mine is one of the best places for butterfly spotting, while the Stoney Middleton lagoons are a haven for bird watchers. The murmurations of starlings are truly breathtaking.
When it comes to refuelling after days out exploring, there are a handful of food options in the village of Stoney Middleton. The Moon Inn is a good choice for unwinding with a drink after a day on your feet, whilst there is also a restaurant at Lovers Leap and a chip shop in the old tollhouse. Keep well-stocked thanks to the general store, or if you want a little more of a selection, head to Bakewell (6 miles) which is just a short drive south of Stoney Middleton.
