Strathpeffer is an unusual sight in the Highlands of Scotland. This quaint village on the edge of Dingwall is a Victorian-era spa town that oozes charm and is bursting with local appeal. Visit Castle Leod on one of its open days to admire the intricate stonework and wander through its grounds, head for the Mackays leisure centre for a dip in their pool or explore the old Spa Pavilion which houses a café and a bar. At the restored train station is the Highland Museum of Childhood which has an excellent collection of games, toys and children’s memorabilia.
Strathpeffer is a popular place to stay for those looking to conquer the mountain of Ben Wyvis, whose flat plateau is relatively easy to climb to. Besides the Munro, there are many scenic walks near the town, including up to the Iron Age hill fort of Knock Farril, from which the mountain views are breathtaking. Blackmuir Woods and Loch Kinellan provide yet more opportunities for walking and wildlife spotting – among the creatures you may see are red kites and Scottish wildcats.
The very popular Highland village of Strathpeffer was once the ‘place to be seen’ in elegant society.
