Isolated sandy beaches, towering craggy mountains and peaceful lochs combine to make Tongue a unique location for a self-catering holiday in Scotland. This far north the Scottish landscape is particularly dramatic, and the pretty seaside town is edged by rugged mountains that attract climbers from around the world. It’s the ideal location for wildlife spotting or for trout fishing in the maze of waterways, or for following the scenic John O’Groats trail by car.
The settlement’s strange name has Old Norse origins, derived from the world ‘tunga’ which referred to the tongue of land jutting out into the loch. The village occupies an attractive position above the Kyle of Tongue, with some impressive stone buildings and a handful of amenities, small children’s playground and a couple of hotels where you can enjoy a hearty meal before heading back to your pick of our Tongue holiday cottages.
There is a lovely short walk from the village up to the ruins of Castle Varrich where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Kyle of Tongue. Numerous other walks spread out across the nearby landscape to suit all abilities, from short forest and coastal strolls to challenging climbs up the likes of Ben Stack, Ben Hope and Ben Loyal.
