Wembury is the name of both a village and a peninsula on the South Devon coast, close to the southern outskirts of the city of Plymouth. It sits within the South Hams, a beautiful area which encompasses some of Devon’s most inspiring scenery.
Wembury beach is within a recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a sanctuary for families looking for a natural escape, off the beaten track. Spend lazy afternoons exploring the rockpools and splashing about in the sea. The water is fairly shallow here, perfect for a cooling swim during the summer, or an invigorating winter dip! When the surf is on, the point break is popular among locals, and the Old Mill Cafe on the beach is an atmospheric spot to stop off for refreshment and watch them showing off their skills.
The South West Coast Path extends from Wembury beach in both directions, providing hours of stunning walking routes. Once you’ve exhausted the coast, head inland on the Two Moors Way which runs from Ivybridge to Lynmouth across the wild and romantic moorland of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Return to your Wembury holiday accommodation to relax and recap the day’s adventures!
The village of Wembury is slightly inland from the beach, and contains plenty of local amenities, including the excellent Odd Wheel Inn which serves up fantastic food in a cosy environment.
You can also feel the history of the area during a stay in Wembury, as evidence of settlements from the Mesolithic area have been found here and Saxons are known to have made this part of the country a well populated area.
Nearby, visit the pretty villages of Noss Mayo (8 miles) and Newton Ferrers (8 miles) where you can enjoy a walk taking in the coast, estuary and charming villages. If shopping is on the agenda, head to Plymouth with its fantastic array of high-street brands; combine your visit with a trip to the National Marine Aquarium for a memorable day out.
