Holidays in Aberfeldy

A town by Loch Tay in Perthshire celebrated by Robert Burns

Aerial view of the village

Aberfeldy is a bustling market town set on the banks of the River Tay, deep in the beautiful countryside of Highland Perthshire. Aberfeldy recently became Scotland’s first Fairtrade Town and has a variety of independent shops, restaurants and galleries.

The town is home to the Birks of Aberfeldy, about which Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns wrote a poem in 1787. Today, you can walk from Aberfeldy to the Falls of Moness, where you will be greeted by spectacular views of the Highlands’ glens, lochs and mountains. The town centre has a lot going on, considering its modest size. There’s a distillery, bookshop, and Berks Cinema, a charming venue where you can grab a coffee or bite to eat as well as catching the latest blockbuster. If you want to get out and experience the Highlands’ great outdoors, mountain biking, white-water rafting and abseiling are all easily accessible from Aberfeldy.

Aberfeldy has a selection of excellent cafes and restaurants, serving everything from fast food to modern Scottish cuisine. In the town square, you’ll find the ever-popular Habitat Cafe , where you can choose from a wide variety of coffee beans, freshly made cakes and sandwiches.

Aberfeldy has a long tradition of distilling the drink for which Scotland is famous, whisky. Following the closure of a number of distilleries in the area, Aberfeldy Distillery opened in 1896 and today, is home to Dewar’s World of Whisky. It’s a popular attraction and informative tours are rounded off with a dram, just so you know what all the fuss is about.

The countryside around Aberfeldy is unspoilt and beautiful. Wild swimming, hiking and cycling are all within easy reach of the town. Highland Safaris provides tours which help you to make the most of the spectacular scenery around Aberfeldy. A Landrover Safari promises to take you to some of the area’s most historically interesting and picturesque sites. Highland Safaris also has a good café where you can warm up next to the peat-burning stove with a cup of coffee after a day of adventures.

“Aberfeldy is a bustling market town set on the banks of the River Tay, deep in the beautiful countryside of Highland Perthshire.”

Aberfeldy is just 32 miles from Perth and is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding glens, lochs and mountains. One of the region’s highest mountains, Ben Lawers, is a short drive away, as is Loch Tay, one of the Highlands’ biggest and most enchanting lochs.
