Amroth holidays: take the first step on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

Amroth

Amroth is a seaside resort with a beautiful beach, at the southern end of the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.

Amroth is a holiday resort in Wales with a long, sandy beach, seven miles east of Tenby. The beach, which runs the entire length of the village, is undoubtedly the biggest attraction of an Amroth holiday. At low tide, an incredible petrified forest is revealed, where fossilised antlers, bones and nuts have been discovered, stranded from when sea levels rose thousands of years ago. As you explore the village, you’ll discover remnants of its past as a coal mining area, including the remains of 19th century mines and tramways. Don’t miss the imposing Amroth Castle and St Elidyr Church, a magnificent listed building.

Amroth’s vast, sandy beach has been awarded Blue Flag status for its water quality and safe environment. It’s a lovely place to swim and sunbathe, and you’ll find a stunning 16th century pub overlooking the beach, which is a popular spot for watching the sun set with a pint of local ale.

The ruins of Amroth Castle can be found just east of the village, surrounded by high walls and a towering archway. On the site, a 19th century country house now stands, which has been built in the style of the original castle. The castle, now a listed building, has a fascinating past as an institution and later, a home for several wealthy businessmen.

Amroth lies at the southern end of the magnificent Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which covers 186 miles of rugged coastline. This challenging route will take you past steep, limestone cliffs, volcanic headlands and red sandstone coves. It’s undoubtedly one of Wales’ most spectacular stretches of coast, and a must-see, whether you’re planning to conquer the whole path or just a small stretch.

Rustic pubs, modern restaurants and relaxed hotels can all be found in Amroth. Whether you’re looking for a light lunch of a romantic evening meal, you’ll find an excellent variety of eateries in the town centre. The Pirate is a popular seafront restaurant and cafe, serving a range of classics, including full English breakfasts and hearty sandwiches.

Another Amroth favourite is The Smuggler’s Bar and Grill, a family friendly restaurant where you can expect excellent service and well cooked, reasonably priced dishes, including pastas, steaks, tapas and burgers. There’s even a kids’ play area, complete with a pirate’s ship and desert island beach. The New Inn is a charming 16th century pub with a reputation for good food as well as an impressive selection of local ales. For a great coffee or light lunch, try Bothy Tearooms, serving homemade cakes and traditional afternoon tea.
