Appleby is an old riverside town with an eye catching castle set against beautiful countryside

UK | North of England | Cumbria | Appleby
St Lawrence's Church

Appleby-in-Westmorland, or as its better known, Appleby, is situated in the Eden Valley which follows the course of the River Eden as it winds between the Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales.

The town was granted a royal charter back in the 12th century (1174) and it still holds a weekly market. The centre of town revolves around a thriving main street, Boroughgate, that hosts a number of independent and name brand stores. The medieval church of St Lawrence is close by as is the Norman-age Appleby Castle. Built in the 12th century for Ranulf le Meschin the castle dominates the town scenery.

Appleby Horse Fair

Appleby Castle sits above the winding River Eden and it has been impressing visitors for centuries. Remarkably it still retains one of the few intact examples of a Norman keep in the world. It also follows the traditional layout of a motte and bailey castle, so it’s well worth a visit to see such a fine example of a British fortress. Also, it is the only one of Lady Anne Clifford’s castles that’s not in a state of ruin either. Daily tours are available but must be booked in advance.

One of the highlights of the local event calendar is the Appleby Horse Fair held each June. People converge on Appleby to buy and sell race horses. It had to happen somewhere! Also look out for the jazz festival that is growing in reputation and popularity. It occurs each August and if you like jazz music it’s something special.

Appleby is lucky enough to be on the Settle-Carlisle Railway line, one of the north’s most scenic routes, so hop on a train and see where you end up, sometimes it’s the journey not the destination that counts. For walks in the Appleby area, one particular walk along the River Eden is relatively easy if you dress for a hike. The walk takes in riverside views, the outdoor centre at Ormside Mill, shady woodland walking near Bandley Bridge and the pretty village of Great Ormside. It’s the perfect walk to gain a fuller understanding of the land around Appleby.
