A pretty Berkshire town that’s more than just a racecourse

Races at Royal Ascot

Just a few miles from the M25 yet situated in peaceful East Berkshire countryside, Ascot is a small town surrounded by leafy woodland with an affluent centre.

In the middle of Ascot itself you will find a choice of restaurants and pubs, as well as several high-class boutiques, making it the perfect place to splurge during a stay in Berkshire. The prestige of the town centre’s establishments, alongside its private schools and its eponymous royal racecourse, has helped to cement Ascot as a place to ‘be seen’ for centuries.

Nearby Windsor Castle

Many visitors come to Ascot simply to go to the nearby racecourse, which is undoubtedly the town’s star attraction. The Royal Ascot Race Meeting has been a staple of the annual horseracing calendar ever since it was established by Queen Anne in 1711, though as many as 25 other races are also held throughout the year. It is also famous for its Ladies’ Day, when women descend on the racecourse hoping to impress in all kinds of stylish and extravagant outfits.

If going to the races isn’t quite your thing, Ascot is also an excellent place to visit for golf. Both the Royal Ascot Golf Club and the Mill Ride Golf and Country Club can be found on the outskirts of the town, and each have a country club where you can socialise with fellow golfers.

Fans of The Beatles may also recognise Ascot thanks to Tittenhurst Park, a Grade II-listed country house which was the former home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and then later Ringo Starr. It features on the cover of the band’s album Hey Jude.

Being relatively small with everything you need, our Ascot holiday cottages are the perfect base for exploring the rest of Berkshire from. Berkshire is a large county with most of its top attractions found at the eastern end. Bracknell, four miles away, is the closest large town, with a wider choice of shops and restaurants to visit, while Windsor, with its world-famous castle and Legoland Theme Park, is only six miles away. On the outskirts of Bracknell, the attractions of Go Ape! Swinley Forest and the Look Out Discovery Centre are both perfect for families.

Although Ascot is small in size, it offers a wide choice of places to eat. The Ascot Grill on the High Street features in the Michelin Guide, offering a selection of steaks and seafood within its minimalistic setting. There are also many lovely and cosy pubs to choose from where you can enjoy a selection of ales alongside their a la carte menus, including the Duke of Edinburgh, The Carpenters Arms and The Thatched Tavern.
