Holidays in Bishops Castle

Small Shropshire town close to the Welsh border and at the heart of an AONB

UK | Heart of England | Shropshire | Bishops Castle
Cardingmill Valley, the Long Mynd

Bishop’s Castle is a small, Shropshire market town at the heart of magnificent, unspoilt hill countryside. Its prominent 18th century Town Hall, which has undergone a major renovation, stands at the top of the main street. There are also two museums and a Heritage Resource Centre, and two breweries, including the oldest licensed brewery in the country; that fact alone should place it on anyone’s visitor’s itinerary of places of historical interest.

There are many pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops catering for almost every need lining the main street of Bishop’s Castle, plus the town is a bustling hub of live entertainment with frequent live music, crafts and art.

Visit nearby Clun, a smaller, picturesque town with an ancient packhorse bridge, an impressive ruined Norman-era castle and romantic river. It offers more limited services while still being a good place to eat, drink and shop. There are lively pubs, a brewery, cafes, galleries and independent shops.

Nearby Shrewsbury

Both towns are situated in the sparsely populated valleys and uplands of the Shropshire Hills and the Welsh border, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Public footpaths, with stiles and way markers, will take you well off the beaten track. Try the trails at nearby Ludlow and Wenlock Edge, or the Long Mynd. Also, look into a day out along the Shropshire Way or King Offa’s Trail.

The countryside around Bishop’s Castle is ideal for a host of other outdoor sports and activities – riding, cycling, tennis, orienteering, fishing, shooting, hang-gliding and other flying sports as well as studying wildlife.

For a day out in a large town with a good mixture of brand name shops and independents, travel to Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury has a great range of restaurants and places of historical interest to discover and boasts an impressive 660 listed buildings. Be sure to include visits to the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Shrewsbury Abbey and Shrewsbury Castle. Shrewsbury’s most famous son is the scientist Sir Charles Darwin, who was the first to develop scientific theories about the evolution of the human species and other animals.
