Small village full of legend found in the Cotswolds close to Stroud

Bisley village

Bisley is a village in Gloucestershire, England, approximately 4 miles east of Stroud, found in the Cotswolds, overlooking the valley of Stroudwater. With traditional Cotswold architecture, the village is most attractive. It has a striking collection of very fine Cotswold architecture from large houses to typical cottages.

Towering above the village is the graceful 13-14th century spire of the church, so tall that it is said to cast a shadow on the nearby Minchinhampton. The chancel, nave, aisles and porch were rebuilt in the mid-19th century. Worthy of note inside are a font of Norman origin and the recumbent figure of a knight who may well be Thomas Achard who took part in the Fifth Crusade - the Siege of Damietta in 1218-19.

In the large and peaceful churchyard is a Poor Souls Light, an ornate candle holder, believed to be the only remaining outdoor example of its kind in England.  Underneath the slope below the church are seven water chutes known as The Wells were restored in 1863. Ever since the ceremony of the ‘Blessing of the Wells’ on Ascension Day has remained a prominent feature of village life.

Lypiatt Park House which is just outside Bisley has a direct historic connection to the infamous Gunpowder Plot. Once the home of Sir John Throckmorton, who was related to the plotters Catesby, Tresham and Winter. One of the rooms is known as the Plot Room from its supposed use by the conspirators.

“Bisley’s church and churchyard is full of history, be sure to visit the symbolic Wells…”
