A quintessentially English village on the southern edge of the New Forest

UK | South Coast | New Forest | Boldre
Boldre Church

Decorated with magnificent old trees, an assortment of traditional houses and a multi-arched bridge, Boldre is a real chocolate-box village located on the southern edge of the New Forest.

Within the village there is a historic church dedicated to St John, dating back at least to the Norman period, with monuments decorating the surrounding churchyard, as well as a welcoming traditional pub, the Red Lion. Located in the heart of the village, the pub offers homecooked meals and a selection of local real ales.

Ponies in Pilley

Surrounding the village are a number of tracks used for horse riding as well as some wonderful country walks, taking in views of the surrounding countryside and the Lymington river, which reach out to the Roydon Woods Nature Reserve and as far as Brockenhurst Park. The New Forest is also right on the village’s doorstep, offering endless possibilities for walks and enjoying the outdoors.

The parish of Boldre also encompasses the neighbouring village of Pilley, and is another traditional and picturesque village worth seeing. Its village in, the Fleur de Lys, claims to be the oldest in the New Forest, having served drinks since 1096.

There are a number of enjoyable days out to be had near the village, including Spinners Garden, set on a slope overlooking the river valley. Amongst the woodland setting are a number of lovely walks, passing rhododendrons, hydrangeas, magnolias, Japanese maples and more, with the collection of plants having been built up over 50 years.

The popular harbour town of Lymington is located just two miles to the south, overlooking the glistening waters of the Solent. World-renowned as a sailing resort, it is also a nice place to visit to browse the choice of independent shops as well as the historic Saturday market, which was first established in the 13th century. Ferries can also be taken from Lymington across the water to the Isle of Wight. The town of Brockenhurst can be found to the north, and is an unusual place to visit where animals such as ponies and donkeys roam freely.
