Bowness-on-Windermere

Just two miles from Windermere sits Bowness-on-Windermere, probably one of the most popular destinations for families visiting the area.

The town’s history can be traced back to the early 15th century, however it didn't become the popular spot for enjoying the lake as we see it today until the 19th century. With a prime location on Lake Windermere, Bowness has plenty to see and do in the town. From experiencing the delights of the local attractions, to a spot of retail therapy, to taking to the water by boat, Bowness has something to offer all ages.

One of the best-loved attractions for families can be found in Bowness; The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is perfect for everybody. Those from older generations will love stepping back in time to see those much loved characters from their own childhoods, while children will adore seeing life-sized models of the characters they get to read about at bedtime. The attraction gets busy during the summer months, but by booking in advance online you can save money and time when you arrive.

The Bowness-on-Windermere Pier is one of the main stops for the Windermere Lake Cruises steam boats. Whether you want to head north up the lake to Ambleside or take the slightly longer journey south to Lakeside, where you’ll also find more attractions to enjoy, they have regular timetables all year around for trips up and down the water.

The town itself is a lively shopping hub. A number of high street chains have stores here as well as an even larger number of boutique stores, independently run by local people. With the tourist industry increasing in the area, more and more shops are jumping into the prime locations in the town so shopping is a must-do, even if it’s just for a spot of window shopping.

For lunch, afternoon tea and dinner you won’t be disappointed. Bowness offers a range of eateries from local pubs to small quaint tea rooms. If you’re looking for a unique experience, Choccobar comes highly recommended for chocoholics. With their own hot chocolate recipe, which they make you try before buying as it’s so rich, is deliciously moreish and served with a selection of fruits and biscuits – as if the hot chocolate wasn’t enough! They also serve a lovely range of sandwiches and lunch items as well as non-chocolate related drinks!

“Nestled on the shore of Lake Windermere, Bowness is a quaint town for all ages of visitor.”

The Lake District is famed for its walking opportunities and this town does not disappoint walkers visiting the area.
