Holidays in Braemar

Cairngorms village, home of The Braemar Gathering Highland Games

The surrounding Cairngorms

Braemar, sheltered in the Cairngorms National Park has been a hotspot for royalty since Queen Victoria arrived for a holiday in the mid-1800s. Today the village in Royal Deeside enjoys its status as a royal favourite. Braemar has some good amenities that include a small post office/village shop and mountain bike hire.

Fishermen make special trips for the salmon filled rivers. It’s the perfect destination for the hiker and mountain climber too. Of course curling up by the fire, enjoying a ‘wee’ dram of whisky or shopping in the royally appointed shops is a more restful way to spend a holiday.

The annual Highland Games is hosted at Braemar each September and is traditionally attended by members of the royal family. It is also known as the Braemar Gathering. The spectacle draws in fans from all over the country and is not to be missed if you’re visiting.

Balmoral Castle

A journey north for a ski down or climb up Mount Cairngorm is a worthy addition. The UK’s highest café is up near the summit too. You can catch a small train up from Aviemore if you want to conserve your energy for other pursuits. If you like castles, stop by the ruins of Kindrochit. Kindrochit Castle was built between 1057 and 1093 by King Malcolm of Scotland and it can be found at the centre of Braemar. The major draw to the area for fans of the royal family is Balmoral Castle that has been the Scottish home of the Windsors ever since it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852. Parts of the castle and estate are open to the public, and you can book safaris and winter tours too.

As Braemar is one of Scotland's highest villages it makes for a superb centre for hillwalkers. It is also the southern gateway to the Cairngorms. Some of the walks follow the course of the River Dee, whilst others ascend through magnificent pine woodlands (namely Glen Derry and Luibeg). For seasoned trekkers, there are a few long approach walks that reach all the way up to the arctic plateaux.
