The canal in Carnforth

Carnforth is a village in the High Furness area with a very famous railway station. Situated a few miles from Lancaster, people come from far and wide to see the setting of Brief Encounter, a 1945 film classic by director David Lean.

In the film, Carnforth stands in for the fictional Milford Junction, but having been restored to its former glory in the 2000s, the station buildings are a bold reminiscent of one of the best cinematic romances of all time. The tea rooms still accepts guests and steam trains still make their journey back and forth to Lancaster. The iconic clock that featured so prominently still marks the time to this day, the backdrop of many photographs for those ‘in the know’.

With its proximity to the coast and hills, Carnforth is a popular destination for trekkers and cyclists. It is well connected to the national road network via the M6. Much of the town’s history revolves around the ironworks, the canal, shipbuilding and the railway. High Furness also enjoys an association with the famous author, Beatrix Potter, who owned much of the land in the area; it has since been donated to the National Trust. Standing over the village is the limestone sentinel, Warton Crag, which is very popular with climbers, with several routes to the top from the village.

“A romantic destination with lots of treks to occupy visitors…”

The nearby village of Warton is the ancestral home of America’s first president George Washington. Other popular visitor attractions and places of historical interest close to Carnforth Leighton Hall and Gardens. It was once the family seat of the furniture-making Gillow dynasty, and is worth a visit for the birds of prey and the wonderful landscaped grounds. Also, spend some time at the Leighton Moss and Morecambe Bay RSPB Nature Reserve, a wide open space with hides in which to observe the migratory and sedentary bird life.

The seaside town of Morecambe is also a pleasant spot for a stroll along a traditional promenade. The sands are endless here and a frequented by cockle pickers. The sea is infamous for coming in very quickly, so keep an eye on the tide tables when venturing far out on the beaches.
