Charmouth view

Known as the gateway to the Jurassic Coast, Charmouth enjoys a prime spot, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

Charmouth attracts hordes of fossil hunters throughout the year and has become one of Dorset’s most popular fossil hunting sites. The area’s coast and cliffs are world-famous for fossils, which can be found washed out of the cliffs or loose on the beach. If you’re a novice fossil hunter, there are guided walks available.

Wandering through the village, discover Charmouth’s simple charm. A range of independent shops and businesses line the streets, including a butcher, post office, newsagents, chocolate shop and fossil shops.

Beach huts on Charmouth beach

As you leave the village, you’ll find Charmouth’s beautiful beach. Divided into two by the mouth of the River Char, this extensive beach is safe for swimming and occasionally attracts surfers when the conditions are right. The beach is perfect for families and offers stunning views the Dorset coastline. For an afternoon snack, head to the Beach Café. Tuck into homemade cakes or Lovington’s ice cream on a sunny day.

Charmouth’s idyllic position on the Jurassic Coast makes the ideal place for avid walkers. The 95-mile stretch of chalky cliffs and secluded beaches make for an exciting adventure. As a World Heritage Site, Dorset’s coast is truly unique. From Charmouth, wander the 2-mile route along the cliffs to Lyme Regis. For a lengthy coastal jaunt, take the 5-mile route to Golden Cap. As the highest cliffs on the south coast of England, you’re guaranteed some spectacular views.
