Stunning architecture

With its ancient city walls, world-famous zoo and 700-year-old shopping rows, Chester is an enchanting place to visit.

A stone’s throw from the Welsh border, on the banks of the River Dee, lies the city of Chester. It’s just a short train journey from London and has become one of the country’s most popular destinations for a relaxing break.

The historic centre is packed with intriguing landmarks, welcoming cafes and independent shops. It’s a great city to explore by foot, whether you’re walking on the 2,000-year-old Roman walls, wandering in the magnificent grounds of the cathedral, or browsing the shops for something unique to take home. Chester has one of the UK’s best zoos, the country’s oldest racecourse and miles of unspoilt countryside on its doorstep, so you won’t be short of things to do. It’s also known for its excellent restaurants, with an impressive variety of eateries serving everything from traditional British dishes to world cuisine.

Just outside the city is the renowned Chester Zoo. Here, you’ll find an incredible selection 12,000 animals, including elephants, rhinos and tigers. The zoo is set in 125 acres of award-winning gardens and is well known for its pioneering conservation projects. Don’t miss the magnificent Sumatran tigers, playful meerkats and impressive butterfly house.

Bursting with history

Chester Cathedral is much more than just a relic of the past. As well a stunning building, you’ll find beautiful gardens, an excellent café and shop, and the Falconry and Nature Gardens, where regular displays of owls, eagles and kestrels take place.

Chester is a unique place to go shopping and a wander through its vibrant centre would be incomplete without stopping at the unique two-tier shopping galleries, the origin remaining something of a mystery.

Once you’ve explored the sloping wooden walkways and independent boutiques, have a look at the famous Eastgate Clock, Chester’s version of Big Ben.
