A charismatic and elegant Cotswold town of unusual architecture

Honey-coloured architecture

Chipping Campden is a small market town in Gloucestershire’s Cotswold district. Its stunning High Street is dotted with interesting shops, ancient inns, terraces and cottages, many of which have been built from the honey-coloured limestone which the region is known for.

Chipping Campden is a lovely place to explore by foot. At its centre stands the magnificent Market Hall, which dates back to the 1600s. Another remarkable historical building is the wool church of St James, which features medieval altar frontals and extravagant 17th century monuments to a local silk merchant, Sir Baptist Hicks. The countryside surrounding the town is some of the Cotswolds’ most beautiful and it has become a popular stop for walkers tackling the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile path which winds its way along the scarp of the Cotswold Edge. There are also two renowned gardens nearby: Kiftsgate and Hidcote Manor.

Town centre

If you’re in the area in May, don’t miss the Campden Music Festival, when some of the world’s best musicians take to the stage in the atmospheric setting of St. James’ Church. Also well worth checking out is the Campden Literature Festival, which brings together some of the UK’s most exciting writers. Perhaps the town’s most unusual event is Robert Dover’s Olimpick Games, which features the sport of shin-kicking as well as a spectacular bonfire and fireworks display.

“Chipping Campden is undoubtedly one of the Cotswolds’ most picturesque towns...”
