A North Wales town with great sea views and a love of flowers

Colwyn Bay

Colwyn Bay is a seaside town along the north coast of Wales. The town has parks and gardens and many places of natural beauty such as Eirias Park. It is close to the main rail and road networks in the area connecting it to the cities of Liverpool and Chester.

Colwyn Bay has been the proud winner of the gold award twelve times for the ‘Wales in Bloom’ competition.

Once dominating the sea views from the promenade, Victoria Pier, built in the early 1900s, has sadly been demolished, after deterioration thanks to over a century of being exposed to the elements. There are however plans to build a boardwalk in its place to bring back the pier's classic seaside charm.

Llandudno is just 7.5 miles along the coast

A well-known visitor highlight is the Welsh Mountain Zoo, which is a short drive from Colwyn Bay near Rhôs-on-Sea. It is home to all kinds of animals and birds so why not go along at feeding time to watch the sea lions and penguins, check out the chimps , or the bird house to see a wide range of colourful species?

Along the seafront is a great walk to Llandudno, which is about 7.5 miles west along the coast. The gentle paved walk for all the family is popular with visitors to the area. The walk takes in Rhôs-on-Sea and around Little Orme’s Head into Llandudno. Llandudno is characterised by its beautiful pier that has been compared to an Indian pavilion floating on a lake. It’s an unusual example because of its ‘Y’ shaped concourse. Just beyond Llandudno is Great Orme’s Head as the coastal path takes you further into the Welsh countryside. You can return to Colwyn Bay from the centre of town by bus or train.

“Colwyn Bay is the eight time winner of the Wales in Bloom competition…”

Although Colwyn Bay has a small town centre, it has a good range of independent and chain stores. It has a number of good restaurants and pubs to dine for lunch and dinner too. For a quality experience, try Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias, which specialises in seafood and also has an under £25 menu if you’re on a budget. It’s located on the promenade with pleasant views out over the Irish Sea.
