Dawlish beach
Renowned for the railway line passing the sea, in front of the town, Dawlish is a hugely popular holiday destination. Historically, the introduction of the railway allowed people to travel to the coast to experience a quintessentially British seaside holiday.
Its golden sandy beach stretches away from the bustling town centre, making it perfect for family days out. Explore the rock pools left at low tide or take a bracing dip in the sea. Situated along the coast from the English Riviera, Dawlish is just a short journey away from further sandy beaches and hidden coves at Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Teignmouth. Take to the water on a sealife or pleasure cruise along the coast to take in the spectacular coastline.

A blend of traditional pubs and contemporary eateries can be found dotted throughout the town. The Mount Pleasant Inn is a firm favourite among locals and visitors, due to its extensive menu of British classics, created with fresh local produce. Expect dishes such as baked loin of cod or roasted duck breast with mint apple and chilli sauce. For a cosy lunch in Dawlish’s town centre, head to the Witches Bowl. Tuck into a portion of sea bass with lemon and ginger or red onion and goats cheese tart. If you’d rather spend your time at the beach, grab a portion of fish and chips and admire the coastal views. There are also plenty of opportunities to spend some loose change in the old arcades, to embrace the traditional seaside holiday atmosphere of Dawlish.
“Dawlish is a truly unique, Victorian seaside resort on Devon’s south coast.”

Avid and novice bird watchers will be in their element here, with 23,000 wildfowl and wading birds travelling to the estuary during autumn.
History buffs will enjoy wandering the grounds at Powderham Castle, just 15 minutes from Dawlish. Set in a stunning deer park on the banks of the River Exe, the castle offers 600 years of fascinating history and heritage.
If you’d like a break from the pretty coastal vistas in favour of a city jaunt, the historic city of Exeter is just 30 minutes away. With a long high street and renowned shopping centre, Princess Hay, Exeter is Devon's capital for shopping.
