A peaceful village located on one of the highest points in Norfolk

Church of St Mary the Virgin

Docking is a small village located in the heart of the north Norfolk countryside. It acts as a perfect central base for exploring what the region has to offer, from market towns to coastal beauty spots, beaches and stately homes.

Found in an unspoilt corner of Norfolk, the centrepiece of this quiet village is a historic church, the Church of St Mary the Virgin. The oldest parts of this Grade II-listed building can be found in the chancel, dating back to the 14th century, while its impressive 80-foot tower was built during the Battle of Agincourt in 1815. An archaeological project is currently ongoing in the village to try and help unearth a lost priory that is believed to have existed in the 13th and 14th century.

Brancaster is the nearest beach, with four miles of golden sand, located just five minutes away by car, while other much-loved Norfolk beaches can also be reached in a short time either on car or by bike. These include Hunstanton, Thornham and Holme.

Coastal scenery at Hunstanton

For those who prefer to explore Norfolk’s scenery by foot, the Norfolk Coast Path winds its way around the coast from Cromer to Hunstanton, before Peddars Way makes its way inland towards Rushford. Peddars Way passes just three miles west of Docking, through 46 miles of open countryside, pine forests and heathland, and along old Roman roads. Nature and wildlife lovers will also enjoy the Ringstead Downs Nature Reserve, home to a variety of interesting plants and butterflies.

Norfolk is home to some of the nation’s grandest stately homes and many of these can be easily reached from Docking, including Sandringham, the Queen’s Norfolk residence. Holkham Hall, set within a 25,000-acre agricultural estate, is also well worth a visit, and often holds large open-air concerts.

“A perfect central base for exploring what North Norfolk has to offer…”

Just a few miles away you’ll find Bircham Windmill, one of the only working windmills around that is open to the public. Here you can step inside the windmill, see its mechanisms working and climb all five of its floors. Norfolk is famous for its windmills, and Docking offers a great opportunity to see one up close just a few minutes down the road.

The Railway Inn is a welcoming country pub perfect for enjoying a bite to eat. Their menu is based around freshly-caught fish and seasonal food, while a range of local ales and draught lagers are also served, ready to be enjoyed by the wood burner. A classic fish and chip supper can also be found in the village high street at the Docking Fish Bar, which is a must-visit during a stay so close to the scenic Norfolk coast. The village also contains a convenience store should you need to pick up any day-to-day items, with a post office inside.
