Royal Burgh found on the shores of Dornoch Firth and at nature’s doorstep

Portmahomack village

The friendly coastal town and Royal Burgh of Dornoch is found at the very edge of Dornoch Firth and the North Sea in the East Highlands. This rural town is a pleasant mixture of colourful history and an intriguing modern day charm. Spectacular mountain views can be enjoyed from the edge of town too. Dornoch may also be on your radar for its long association with golf. The town has a championship golf course, ranked 6th in the world by Golf Digest in 2014.

Explore the rugged shore of Dornoch Firth, with its untouched golden beaches and the vast amount of wildlife found within the nature reserves and the SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) that runs beside the beach.

Dunrobin Castle

The centre of Dornoch is home to a number of striking historical buildings including the 13th century Cathedral. Built by Gilbert de Moravia, the last Scotsman to be added to the ‘Calendar of Saints’ it’s been receiving worshippers since it was opened in 1239. It’s open to the public and volunteers provide tours. Just across from the Cathedral is Dornoch Castle. Originally built for the Bishop of Caithness in the 1500s, it’s had a chequered history as a jail, a school and a hotel. Apparently it’s the backdrop for many a ghost legend too. Look out for the Witch’s Stone that commemorates the last witch burning in Scotland in 1722. Holidaycottages.co.uk head office is situated in England’s equivalent, Bideford.

If you’re looking for a trail to walk, look no further than Dornoch Beach which is a long sandy dune lined strip along Dornoch Firth and it’s an optimal spot to see local birds and wildlife, especially at Dornoch Point. There are trails up into the mountains beyond, too.

“Dornoch is great little town with perfect views and one of the world’s best golf courses…”

For great eateries Dornoch is the place for seafood and Scottish cuisine, try Sutherland House in the centre of town. It’s a popular spot with the locals and visitors alike. It promises a warm welcome and an interesting menu too. Also try Luigi, which although Italian, doesn’t offer a traditional menu. Instead it has a range of delicious meals from Scotland and beyond.
