Edinburgh Fringe Festival takes place every August, drawing visitors from all over the world. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists launching their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance and a lot more.

Edinburgh Castle

For independent food shops, fashion boutiques and tempting cafes, take a stroll down the cobbled streets of Edinburgh's West End. Prince's Street is Edinburgh's most popular shopping thoroughfare and is home to a host of high street stores.

Edinburgh has a number of parks and gardens to explore. For a spectacular view of the city, head for Hollyrood Park. Here, you can climb Arthur’s Seat, a towering hill and extinct volcano from which you can see the whole of Edinburgh and the countryside beyond. Hollyrood Park’s 600 acres are perfect for a long walk or cycle, with a number of interesting historical sites. Check out the ruins of St Anthony’s Chapel and the dramatic Salisbury Crags.

Edinburgh has a number of excellent family attractions. For close-up encounters with pandas, penguins and parrots, head for Edinburgh Zoo. Alternatively, visit the National Museum of Scotland for a glimpse into the country’s fascinating past.

Food-lovers will feel at home in Edinburgh. In the city centre you’ll find everything from takeaways to world famous fine dining restaurants. For traditional Scottish dishes including haggis, neeps and tatties, head for The Dome. This grand and opulent restaurant is one of the city’s most popular with visitors and locals. For award-winning, modern Scottish food, head for Castle Terrace.

If you fancy a hotdog or burger washed down with a craft beer in one of the city’s hippest bars, look no further than the Hanging Bat.

Edinburgh is an excellent base from which to explore some of Scotland’s most beautiful glens, lochs and mountains. Just a short drive from the city centre will take you deep into the rugged countryside of the Lothians, where you can hike, sail, wildlife-watch and explore the many historical ruins which dot this enchanting region.
