Evesham is situated in the Vale of Evesham, and was once a part of the great forest of Feckenham. Central to the town and a draw for history buffs is The Almonry, a 14th century, Grade-I listed Almoner’s house.
Since the 1950s it has been the home of the town museum (and now a tourist information centre) which is full of artefacts from Saxon times up to today including documenting such important happenings as the history of the defeat of Baron Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. There is also a Crimean cannon, prehistoric fossils, and a lovely walled flower garden to relax in.
A great abbey once stood in Evesham, but now all that remains of it is the Bell Tower. The rest of the buildings were knocked down after Henry VIII closed the monasteries in 1540.
Almonry Heritage Centre
For evening entertainment, Evesham’s Arts Centre is one of the leading live venues in the region. Its diverse programme of events includes drama, comedy, music and workshops. Be sure to have a peak at the line-up before you go on holiday.
A trip to The Regal in the Malverns is also worth it if you hanker for old cinemas from the golden age. Fully restored to its former glory, if you’re looking for somewhere to go one evening then look no further.
"Evesham was once the site of a great abbey. The imposing Bell Tower is all that remains…"
Evesham also has a large leisure centre, with a swimming pool and a climbing wall, alongside a gym, and health and beauty facilities.
Being a riverside town, there are some lovely opportunities to enjoy the water. Boating via a cruise or hiring your own craft is possible too, to make the most of the views of the town from the water.
There are lots of open spaces along the Avon too, to have a stroll or a picnic. Pick up some food in the Riverside Centre, the town’s modern indoor shopping mall, or walk around Bridge Street or Market Square to find provisions.
Evesham is well-connected to the national road and rail network. It is within good travelling distance of the cities of Worcester and Hereford for great shopping and evening entertainment. England’s second city of Birmingham can also be reached by train, taking you into its heart.
