The oldest market town in Kent

UK | South Coast | Kent | Faversham
The river at Faversham

The historic market town of Faversham lies ten miles from Canterbury and has been a settlement since Roman times. The town used to be an important seaport and is well known as a centre for the beer industry with the Shepherd Neame Brewery which was founded here in 1698. The town is situated on a winding creek and its rich history is reflected in the fine architecture and the medieval market square that has been used for trading for over 900 years. To this day the market runs three times a week and is the oldest and most thriving market in Kent.

Faversham has enjoyed an interesting and varied history and over 500 listed buildings testify to this. Just wandering along the high street you will be able to spot many blue plaques on the houses that bear witness to the famous resident who used to live there, but if you wish to find out more of the history of the town a visit to the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre will bring the past to life with a recreation of a Victorian schoolroom, costumes, shop fronts, and a wide range of interactive displays all presented in an old 15th century former Inn.

The town was a major centre for the production of gunpowder from the 17th to early 20th century and Chart gunpowder mills formed part of the first gunpowder factory producing powder for the battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar. It has now been fully restored and in working order, and entrance is free. Walkers will enjoy a stroll along the Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park Woodland Trail which leads you past an old powder mill, along canals and through the 250 year old gunpowder works.

“A fine Kent town long known for its ales…”

Wandering through the pretty streets of Faversham you cannot mistake the wafting smell of hops coming from the Shepherd Neame brewery located in the centre of town. Since Kent is the centre of hop growing in England there have been several breweries in Faversham and Shepherd Neame claims to be the oldest, family owned brewery in Britain producing around 230,000 barrels a year. You can discover how beer is made from the local hops using water from the brewery well by taking a guided brewery tour ending with a chance to taste some of the Kentish Ales. Pop into the gift shop next door to buy gifts and mementoes of your trip.
