Holidays in Filey

Seaside charm in all its traditional glory

Filey seaside landscape

Filey is home to a sweeping, sandy bay and all the attractions you would expect from a traditional British seaside town. As well as the seaside arcades and doughnut stands, Filey has an intriguing selection of shops, perched on the towering cliff top. Surrounded by rugged North Yorkshire countryside, Filey has plenty to offer, from donkey rides and slot machines on the promenade to sunbathing on the beach, where porpoises are often spotted as they pass the bay.

Filey Bay is a vast stretch of sand, a short walk from the town centre. Even in the middle of summer, it’s never hard to find a peaceful spot to lay down a towel. At one end of the bay is Filey Brigg, a wild peninsula which is perfect for hiking and bird-watching. Also nearby are the towering Bempton Cliffs, which are inhabited by puffins and razorbills. Filey’s town centre is a gentle and very British affair.

You’ll find fish and chip shops, cafes and a selection of independent shops selling memorabilia from times gone by. Filey is well-positioned if you want to explore the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, including the long-distance footpath, the Cleveland Way.

In the oldest part of Filey you’ll find the award-winning Filey Museum, set in a series of 17th century buildings, including a former fisherman’s cottage. Here, you’ll be taken on Filey’s journey from a fishing village to a popular holiday resort.

One of Filey’s newer attractions, and well worth a visit, is Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park. Here you can pet donkeys and ponies, and get close to a variety of dazzlingly-coloured exotic birds. You’ll also find a charming gift shop and an excellent café.

There’s no shortage of cafes and restaurants to grab a bite to in Filey. For freshly-baked bread and homemade cakes, head for Filey Deli on Belle Vue Street. If you want to pick up some fresh fish, dressed crab or langoustines straight from the water, look no further than H.G Lovitt’s, Filey’s very own fish merchant.

Eatery is one of the town’s most popular cafes, serving everything from full-English breakfasts to Sunday roasts. For a pint of ale and regular live music, pop into the Imperial, which has been at the heart of social life in Filey for decades.
