Bempton Cliffs bird colony

Marked by a stretch of craggy white cliffs surrounding a small village, Flamborough is a nature lover's paradise. The coastline is a great base for bird watching, hiking along windswept paths and sea kayaking around the bay. With a scenic nature reserve and two old lighthouses nearby, this Special Area of Conservation is a haven for anyone looking to explore the Yorkshire coastline at its dramatic and unspoilt.

Flamborough is at the centre of a lovely area of the North East, so when visiting make sure that the bird reserve at Bempton Cliffs is on your itinerary. Bempton Cliffs is one of the most accessible and best seabird colonies on the British mainland. Over 250,000 seabirds, consisting of puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, herring gulls, fulmars, and shags make Bempton the largest colony of its kind in the UK. Half a dozen viewpoints look over the cliffs and a great visitor centre which has a museum, information centre, a café, a gift shop and WCs.

The North Sea from Flamborough

There’s also a great nature trail that weaves its way around the park so take a good pair of binoculars and let the fun begin. The cliffs are open all year around but the species of birds obviously vary depending on its migratory cycle.

You can also catch a boat tour from Bridlington and marvel at the ‘seabird city’ from the water. A worthwhile three-hour excursion on the Yorkshire Belle leaves from Bridlington’s port.

Other highlights in Flamborough are its lighthouses: the first of which is a 17th century octagonal example, and the other, at the opposite end of the bay, is an early 19th century edifice clad with shingle. Rudson Monolith is a pleasant afternoon in the open air, an ancient hamlet possibly dating back to Neolithic times. Water sports can be enjoyed at the sandy beaches called North and South Landing. Hire a kayak and explore some sea caves, or take your family rock pooling. You never know what you will find.

“If you like birdwatching, Flamborough Head is the best place to view seabirds…”

For shopping and entertainment, travel north to the picturesque seaside town of Scarborough - the best place for a stroll along a traditional promenade, an ice cream, a rest in deckchair and some tasty cod and chips. Scarborough is one of the best and most popular resorts along the North Yorkshire coast. Hikers can also take the Coast Path that runs through the whole region, showcasing some beautiful, craggy views of the unspoilt North Sea gilded landscape.
