Holidays in Gaydon

The home of the British Motor Museum

UK | South West | Cotswolds | Gaydon
The Warwickshire countryside

Gaydon is small village near Coventry and Leamington Spa. It has strong ties to the once prolific motor engineering industry in the area. On the site of a former WW2 military airbase is the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) site and Aston Martin’s head office. JLR also operate close by at the Whitley Plant just outside Coventry.

Gaydon is the home of the British Motor Museum, which is said to house the largest collection of exhibit cars in the world. They are mainly showcased British cars with stories of their place and roles in history. There is a similar Transport Museum in the centre of Coventry if you are a keen 'petrolhead'. Set over 65 acres, its full collection cannot be exhibited at the same time. Iconic cars on display include prototypes and variations on unreleased vehicles, the very first Land Rover ever produced, the first and last Freelander, the first Mini, and a Sinclair C5.

Be sure to visit the Victorian town of Royal Leamington Spa, a superb shopping and eating experience. The town is gilded with long streets, tall white colonnaded buildings and quiet squares and gardens. Visit the Royal Pump Rooms to see the source of the spring waters, and take a stroll around the ornate Jephson Gardens. It’s possible to take a rowing boat along the River Leam on a fine day. You won’t be lost for places to eat and drink, and of a night there’s a bold range of entertainment to choose from. For something a bit more traditional, venture to the centre of Coventry, which is famous for its authentic curry houses on along either medieval Spon Street or Far Gosford Street.

“Gaydon is within short driving distance of all the top visitor attractions in the area…”

Arguably, the most famous and most visited town in the region is Stratford-upon-Avon, the former home of 16th century playwright, William Shakespeare. Be sure to take in a few of the museums, including one at his old house and his wife Anne Hathaway’s place too. If you have time, a play at the RSC Theatre should be a part of your holiday plans. The purpose-built riverside theatre is just about the best place to see a quality Shakespeare production outside of the capital.

With so much on Gaydon’s doorstep, the village is in the perfect position from which to explore the heart of England, while within a 90-minute train ride you could be in the centre of London. Gaydon is beset on all sides by glorious countryside, waterways and cross country walking routes through delightful villages and hamlets with some lovely Warwickshire pubs.
