A Glencoe cottageGlencoe is a beautiful and vast area of varied landscapes and habitats found within the area of Lochaber, the ‘Outside Capital of the UK’. It is the perfect holiday location for thrill-seekers, trekkers and wildlife enthusiasts. Whatever your interests are, Glencoe has something active and exciting to offer everybody.
Whilst holidaying in Glencoe you will be perfectly based to explore Lochaber and Fort William. Embark on one of the many trails or try your hand at fishing or angling, or why not have a go at water sports like kayaking or paddleboarding?
Glencoe is also a draw for those interested in Highland history too, and is the famous site of the notorious massacre of 1692. When England’s William III replaced James II on the British throne in 1689, he offered peace, on condition that the Scottish Clans and people would take an oath of allegiance by a certain date. The massacre was a fall out from this decree being observed at the very last minute by a few clan heads. As you would expect there’s a lot more to the tale and much has been written about the massacre.
The wilds of Glencoe
Today, the glen is virtually uninhabited but the main villages are Glencoe village, Kinlochleven and Ballachulish. The best way to enjoy Glencoe is to go on a trek. Buy provisions and good kit; you will be rewarded with excellent vistas of mountain ranges. For outgoing novices try a trip to the Lost Valley, or a trip to Buchaille Etive Mor, a big mountain that you can see as you enter from Rannoch Moor. For even more experienced walkers, the Aonach Eagach ridge is regarded as the most thrilling scramble in the mainland UK. On the other side of the Glen are the three sisters of Glencoe and above them Stob Coire am Lochan and Bideann nam Bean. Glencoe is also an excellent rock climbing venue.
“Glencoe is a place of beauty and perfect for those who love the outdoor life…”
