View to the village from the model village gardens

Decorated with winding streets and charming thatched cottages, Godshill is a picture-perfect village found at the heart of the island.

The village’s origins date back more than a thousand years, with the parish having been established before the compilation of the Domesday Book. Much of this history has been retained in the village’s buildings, with the village streets alone being one of Godshill’s main attractions. At the centre lies the All Saints’ Church, a stunning medieval church notable for its wall painting of a Lily crucifix, just one of two in the whole of Europe.

All Angels' Church

Godshill’s pubs and tearooms are also a big reason why the village has remained popular with visitors. One of the stand-out establishments is The Griffin, which is much-loved by families due to its large play area and its very own maze. Inside, it serves a range of local ales and a traditional menu, including a Sunday carvery. The Old World Tea Gardens is another popular eatery, with plenty of space to both inside and out to tuck into cream teas, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and more.

Another of Godshill’s largest attractions is the Godshill Model Village. Set amongst two acres of landscaped gardens, here you will find miniature model villages of both Godshill and coastal resort Shanklin as they would have appeared in the 1920s. Each cottage, pub and church is a faithful reproduction, making this model village an interesting and charming step back in time, with the model railway being the icing on the cake. Lovers of horticulture will also enjoy the surrounding gardens, home to a display of more than 3000 trees and shrubs pruned to perfection.

For a more active day out, the Allendale Equestrian Centre is a popular local riding school. You can either improve your horse riding skills with one of their classes or explore the gorgeous surrounding countryside on horseback with a hacking session.

Godshill is in an enviable countryside location, between the large town of Newport and the seaside resort of Ventnor, making it easy to explore further afield. Newport is the island’s shopping hub and you’ll find a wider choice of places to eat here too down the many side streets. Meanwhile in Ventnor, you can enjoy a traditional day at the seaside, take a stroll along the promenade, explore the stunning Botanic Gardens and get involved in a varied calendar of cultural events.
