An historic town with many famous links

Grantham's position in South Lincolnshire makes it an ideal destination to spend a holiday in the county, with both coast and country accessed via good transport links.

The town's history is far-reaching and illustrious, recognised as the birthplace of both Baroness Margaret Thatcher and Sir Isaac Newton.

To discover more about their life and links to the area, the Grantham Museum houses commemorations to both famous figures, or if you want to uncover more secrets about Newton, pay a visit to his birthplace, Woolsthorpe Manor, just outside the town. There is also a biennial festival that is held in his honour.

There are strong connections to World War II in the town; the 1943 Bomber Command HQ was used during the Dambusters Raid, and as well as the famous faces exhibited at the town's museum, there is also additional information about the aviation history that adds another layer of fascination to the region.

The cultural appeal doesn't stop there, as the 282 feet tall spire of St Wulfram's Church offers a towering architectural landmark, and multiple nearby National Trust properties such as Belvoir Castle and Easton Walled Gardens provide a relaxing and informative day out with a difference. The Guildhall Arts Centre also brings a lot to the town, with activities for families, dramatic performances and live shows all adding to the entertainment factor.

Sport is a big draw for visitors to the town, with Meres Leisure Centre hosting huge competitions regularly throughout the year. There are plenty of cycling and walking routes around the county, perfect for soaking up the Lincolnshire countryside, and with the River Witham running through Grantham, there are lots of riverside strolls and picnic spots to choose from.

Markets in the town are a big draw; handmade goods and varied stalls are a staple of the weekly Saturday market, whilst the monthly farmers' markets showcase local, homegrown produce of all shapes, tastes and sizes.

For a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a slice of cake and pot of tea in the afternoon, Teaspoon Tea Company has rave reviews from all who visit. For a delicious dinner, Piccola Venezia is a highly-acclaimed Italian restaurant, or for a taste of something a little closer to home The Woodhouse Arms offers rustic yet refined British dishes in a traditional pub setting.

The picturesque town of Boston is easily reached from Grantham, offering a change of scenery and another pretty Lincolnshire town to explore. Alternatively continue on to the coast, heading for Skegness to discover a truly British seaside resort.
