Pretty Harrogate scene

Situated on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and renowned for its spa waters, Harrogate is a hit with culturists, historians and holidaymakers alike. It is also home to the Harrogate Convention Centre which is the biggest event space in the north. Also be sure to coincide a visit to town for the Great Yorkshire Show at the town Showgrounds.

An idyllic town packed with picturesque gardens, historic architecture and independent boutiques, there’s a little something for everyone to admire. It’s no wonder Harrogate topped polls for the happiest place to live for so long!

Dubbed ‘The English Spa’ in 1596 the town, found in the heart of Yorkshire, boasts spa water high in iron, sulphur and salt, which was commonly used as a health treatment when first discovered. The Royal Pump Room is still open today as a museum, showcasing the original equipment used in its heyday.

RHS Harlow Carr

The Valley Gardens combine the mineral springs with a horticultural haven. A perfect place for exploration, the area is home to a multitude of different gardening styles and often plays host to events and concerts in the summer months. For more floral finds, just outside the centre of Harrogate lies the RHS Garden Harlow Carr. The stunning gardens provide a leafy retreat as you wander through woodland and alongside the streams, admiring the tranquillity of a botanical wonderland that blossoms all year round.

Retail therapy sits high on the list of what to do when visiting the area. The town centre is home to an array of boutique fashion shops and high-end designer labels, as well as high street stores in and around the Victoria Shopping Centre. The Montpellier Quarter also offers exclusive shops and a huge range of antiques dealers, ideal for hunting out a unique bargain.

Never short of places to eat, Harrogate has an abundance of cafés and restaurants to choose from. Perhaps one of its most famous is Betty's Tea Room, which was first established in 1919. To this day it remains a hit with both locals and visitors, with queues often forming outside the doors for one of their famous afternoon teas. The fashionable spa town also plays host to many Michelin-starred restaurants, including Norse, Quantro and Orchid to name but a few.
