A thriving market town surrounded by stunning countryside

Nearby Hardraw Force

Hawes is a charming market town, surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

At 850 feet above sea level, Hawes is England’s highest market town. Its thriving market has been running since 1307 and still attracts visitors from far and wide. A wealth of fresh, local produce is sold here, but it’s undoubtedly Wensleydale Cheese for which Hawes is most famous. As you explore the historic town centre, you’ll stumble upon a number of fascinating landmarks, including the water-powered Gayle Mill, which dates back to the 18th century. The countryside around Hawes is a stunning environment for walking, cycling and various other outdoor pursuits. Don’t miss Hardraw Force, one of the country’s highest waterfalls, which Turner famously painted before a night at the nearby Green Dragon Inn.

Don’t leave Hawes without a trip to Wensleydale Creamery, which has been producing Yorkshire’s world-famous crumbly cheese since the 1800s. There’s an excellent café, gift shop and museum, where you can learn more about how the art of Wensleydale cheese-making has evolved over the centuries.

Also well worth a visit is the magnificent Gayle Mill, a beautifully restored sawmill, driven by water-powered turbines. The mill’s fascinating history and appearance on the TV show, Restoration, can be explored at the excellent visitor centre.

In and around Hawes, you’ll find award-winning restaurants, cosy, old pubs and traditional tearooms. The Stone House is a bright, modern restaurant which serves food all day, with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients. Another good option is The White Hart Inn, an award-winning pub in the heart of the town. During the day, it’s a nice spot to read the papers with a cup of coffee, and a good bet for a pint of ale and hearty plate of food in the evening. Herriot’s is popular among Hawes locals for its reasonably priced lunches and Yorkshire cream teas.

If you’re keen to sample a few local dishes featuring the area’s famous cheese, look no further than Calvert’s, which serves Wensleydale ploughman’s and a delicious ginger and Wensleydale cheesecake.

Hawes is an excellent base for exploring the National Park and some of north-east England’s most interesting towns, such as Darlington and Kendal. A stone’s throw from Hawes, you’ll discover some of Yorkshire’s most spectacular countryside, where you can wildlife-watch and explore countless walking trails, criss-crossing the ruggedly beautiful dales.
