Helford holidays: a pretty, sleepy village on the Helford River

Charming buildings set into the hill in Helford

Tucked away alongside the River Helford, the village is backed by ancient oak woodland and offers a truly serene atmosphere. Its idyllic location is also most convenient, as it’s just around the corner from Falmouth.

One of the best ways to explore Helford is by ferry . Running between Helford Passage and Helford village, the ferry allows you to explore the surrounding area, including Falmouth’s bustling centre.

Boats moored in the River Helford

To venture through Helford on foot, there is a delightful walk along the river, passing the edge of Falmouth Bay and the old port of Gweek at the river’s head. Whether you’d like to reach waterside pubs, galleries or heritage sites, Helford is the place for you. Nearby, you’ll find the sub-tropical Trebah Gardens . With over four miles of footpath to discover, wander under canopies of exotic flora and fauna. Glendurgan Garden is another beautiful spot, full of stunning plants and walks along the valley. Both gardens neighbour the tiny fishing village of Durgan, also set on the river. Owned by the National Trust, the village takes you back in time. For families, be sure to visit the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek for a day out.

Set directly on the pretty water’s edge, local pub The Shipwrights Inn is the perfect place to unwind for a bite to eat. Using fresh local produce, the menu changes daily, incorporating delicious seasonal ingredients. Expect dishes such as chicken breast with butternut ginger and lemon grass compote, or breaded Cornish brie with sweet tomato chutney. In the summer, the pub runs a barbecue outside. If you’re just stopping by for a drink, sit outside with a pint of local ale and admire the beautiful views.

“Set in unspoiled surroundings, Helford is a picture-postcard Cornish village.”

The Ferryboat Inn also offers an eclectic menu, using Cornish meats and seafood to create hearty dishes. Tuck into a plate of Cornish crab rarebit or Kernow Sausage Co pork sausages with mustard and dill mash. For a light lunch, pay a visit to the Potager Garden and Glasshouse Café Nestled within the pretty grounds, the café offers delicious breakfasts and lunches, using organic produce.
