Helston holidays: the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula

Helston's picturesque boating lake

Its idyllic location, close to some of Cornwall’s most famous beaches, makes it a perfect holiday destination. Just a short distance away, you’ll find the renowned Kynance Cove, Porthleven beach, Gunwalloe beach, Poldhu Cove and Mullion Cove.

With a friendly atmosphere, the town is brimming with attractions, culture, heritage sites and gastronomic eateries. At the centre, indulge in an afternoon of boating at the beautiful Coronation Park. If parkland and pretty gardens take your fancy, it’s well worth visiting the nearby Penrose Estate. Home to Cornwall’s largest natural lake, Loe Pool, the Penrose Estate offers rich farmland and woodland to explore, all the while within a short distance of the magnificent coastline.

One unusual tradition is Helston’s Flora Day. Held during early May, the town celebrates the end of winter to mark the arrival of spring. Expect colours, dancing and music.

Make the most of Helston’s location by exploring the coastal parks. There are long and short routes available, including a circular walk around Loe Pool, Gunwalloe Caves and Porthleven to Rinsey Head. If you’re looking for a different way to get around? Check out Cornwall Segway for an exciting afternoon out.

Helston is perfect for families, as it’s home to the famous Flambards theme park, Helston Railway and the Cornish Seal Sanctuary . If you’re visiting as a couple or with friends, Helston and the surrounding area has plenty to offer in the way of food, music and art.

“Home to one of Britain’s oldest pubs, unique traditions and the Lizard Peninsula’s trademark scenery, Helston is a bustling town.”

Pay a visit to The Blue Anchor , one of the country’s oldest pubs. Having brewed and sold beer for around 600 years, this is a prime spot to sample Cornwall’s traditional ales. Heading out for dinner? Try The Top House Inn for some fine local dishes. Outstanding seafood meals include Cornish flat fish, local crab and the pan seared scallops. The Halzephron Inn is also renowned among locals and visitors, offering delectable meals such as classic beef wellington with chasseur sauce and vegetables and the roasted breast of guinea fowl with spiced thigh terrine and potato rosti.

Just outside Helston in the coastal village of Porthleven, you’ll find the Seadrift Café . This is a great spot to stop for a light bite, such as chorizo, fig and parmesan salad or Thai-style crab cakes. In Helston’s centre, you’ll find numerous delis and cafes where you can pick up a snack while you’re browsing.
