The attractive town of Huntingdon sits on the River Great Ouse and is best known for being the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell.

Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon in 1599 and became the first leader of the only British republic. He lived in the town for most of his life and became its MP in 1628. To learn more about his controversial career, visit the Cromwell Museum, housed in what used to be the grammar school where he was educated as a boy.

The Traditional Market takes place at the Market Square on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can expect to find everything from fish and meat to jewellery and clothes. Huntingdon also has an outstanding Farmer’s Market, where you can pick up cheese, meat, pies and plenty more from some of the area’s best producers.

You’ll find an excellent variety of welcoming cafes, elegant restaurants and cosy pubs in the Huntingdon area. For a pint of ale on the bank of the River Ouse, try The Brampton Mill in the nearby village of Brampton.
