From the delightful north coast to the beautiful Quantock Hills

UK | South West | Somerset | Kilve
Kilve coast

Blessed with its beautiful Somerset coastal and countryside surroundings, Kilve is celebrated for its varied country walks, welcoming atmosphere and fascinating beach with its distinguishing rock formations and bounty of fossils. The village hall is alive with local activities and entertainment, and teeming with local pride.

This pretty village is nestled within the Quantock Hills which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You’ll find this location still retains much of its traditional features from a 17th century coaching inn to the quaint village hall. For those looking to experience the heritage of the area, a visit to the Church of St Mary is a must. This former medieval Chantry, although now in ruins, is a beautiful spot to admire the history of Kilve. Alongside the Chantry, you’ll find the delightful Chantry Tea Gardens which are open all year to indulge in a spot of tea and cake to complement your visit.

Go fossil hunting on Kilve beach

One of the most popular reasons to visit Kilve is its stunning beach. As you make your way from the Chantry, you’ll find what the poet Wordsworth described as ‘Kilve’s delightful shore’. This beach is an Area of Scientific Interest with the dramatic cliff face embedded with Jurassic history; this makes it the perfect place for fossil hunting. On the beach where the stream meets the sea is the spot where a tiny port, used for importing culm, was once found. You can just make out the remains of the stone jetty here and a lime kiln nearby.

A walk along Kilve beach also gives you an insight into the history of the area. Along the shoreline there were a number of working mills highlighting how farmers used water power in their processes and although a private residence, The Old Mill in the village still retains its overshot wheel remnant of the time.

“Full of geological history, Kilve beach is perfect for beautiful walks and fossil hunting”

If you’re looking to enjoy a delicious meal on your stay, after a short drive away in the nearby villages of Dunster, Watchet and Bridgwater, you’ll find a variety of places to sample local produce and tasty tipple. If you want to explore further afield, a drive west of the village will take you to the pretty seaside town of Minehead and the stunning Exmoor countryside. Or perhaps discover the towns and villages dotted throughout the Quantock Hills.
